Minimal Realism

Artist and conservationist Charley Harper had an alternative way of looking at nature that was way ahead of its time. His style–what he called “minimal realism”–captures the essence of a subject in as few strokes as possible, reducing complex natural forms into simple geometric shapes. His often lighthearted humor combined with his graphic genius sets him apart from any other wildlife artist.

Limp on a Limb

Featuring a relaxing feline in a tree branch among swirling leaves in the breeze. The hours are shown in one of the cat’s calico spots, and the minutes are indicated with a single yellow leaf in the foliage.

JAPAN AUTOMATIC

Turtleneck

Cleverly tells the time with a turtle in a pond. The turtle’s tail points to the hour, the lilypad with the white flower points to the minutes, and the constantly moving turtle head indicates the seconds.

Day & Night Quartz

Puffins Passing

Displaying daytime from 6 am to 6 pm, with the sun pointing to the hours and the minutes shown in the puffin’s plumage. The watch then shifts to a nighttime scene from 6 pm to 6 am, and the hours are shown by the moon.
